How to Wash Needlepoint

Needlepoint shouldn t be washed in soap and water because the canvas has a water-soluble sizing that gives it body. Washing it in soapy water will remove the sizing. Commercial dry cleaning is a better option. You can ask your local needlework store for dry cleaning recommendations. We suggest asking your dry cleaner to clean, but not press your needlepoint piece. Any wrinkles will come out once your piece is finished. For older needlepoint pieces that are dirty from dust, we recommend vacuuming. First cover the end of your vacuum hose with a piece of nylon stocking or light mesh. Start with the front of the needlepoint and vacuum while keeping the nozzle just above the piece. For needlepoint pieces with stains, try spot cleaning using Orvus mixed with water. Orvus has a neutral cleaning agent and is safe to use on needlepoint projects. Dab the stain (do not rub) to remove it from the canvas.
