Joan Elliott

I began designing for needlework quite by chance after graduating with a Fine Arts degree in 1970. One day while job hunting in New York City, portfolio in hand, I passed by a store and was drawn in by the glorious array of colorful yarns displayed in the shop window. I began chatting with the owner and was soon hired as a freelance artist creating custom designed needlepoint canvases. As time passed, I began searching for other companies that might produce kits and charts, and so my career began.

I have also worked in textile design, hand weaving, and spinning, so my love of color and fiber have always been a wonderful part of my work. As a child, my mother taught me to knit, crochet and embroider. I was fascinated by the detailed work she and my grandmother could create with their hands, whether it be an embroidered tablecloth or tiny dresses for our dolls. I think that I realized I was an artist when, much to my delight, my father came home from work with my first set of paints and brushes.

Besides countless kits on the market, I have 11 solo books of cross stitch designs and I have contributed to many other collaborative books with some of the best designers. You will find my work published in all the major cross stitch magazines both here in the States and in the UK.

I live with my husband in Brooklyn, New York. Being close to a park, museum, and the botanic garden offers much inspiration within the hectic city. We spend summers in Southern Vermont where we are blessed to take in the incredible beauty and wonders of the countryside. I continue designing while we are there and get to indulge my other passion, gardening. I sneak out amongst the flowers and veggies whenever I take a break from work. It’s the perfect way to soothe the soul.

Being able to use all the delicious threads and fabrics that DMC has to offer has not only given me the opportunity to meet and work with the wonderful people there but has helped make all these years of designing a pleasure. Our latest collaboration, the ‘Stardust Fairy’ was a joy to work on. I love the way the sparkling Stardust fabric helps set off the magical theme of the design and DMC’s glimmering metallic and luxurious satin threads add just the right touch. I am so pleased that DMC is offering this design as a special free download to everyone.

I love hearing from stitchers and my blog and newsletter help me keep in touch with everyone who enjoys stitching my designs.
